  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">ICELAND</span><span class="style42">Official name:</span><span class="style13"> L┬┤ydveldid Island (The Republic of Iceland)</span><span class="style42">Member of: </span><span class="style13">UN, NATO, OSCE</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">102819 km2 (39699 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">264000 (1993 est)</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13">Reykjavik 154000 (city 101000; K├│pavogur 17000; Hafnarfj├╢rdhur 16000; 1992 est)</span><span class="style42">Other major city: </span><span class="style13">Akureyri 15000 (1992 est)</span><span class="style42">Language: </span><span class="style13">Icelandic (official; 100%)</span><span class="style42">Religion: </span><span class="style13">Evangelical Lutheran (93%)</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">The 63-member Althing (Parliament) is elected under a system of proportional representation by universal adult suffrage for a four-year term and meets as an Upper House of 20 members and a Lower House of 43 members. The President ΓÇô who is also directly elected for four years ΓÇô appoints a Prime Minister and a Cabinet who are responsible to the Althing.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">The greater part of Iceland has a volcanic landscape with hot springs, geysers and some 200 volcanoes ΓÇô some of them active. Much of the country is tundra. The south and center are covered by glacial icefields, the largest of which contains Hvannadalshn├║kur at 2119 m (6952 ft) the countryΓÇÖs highest peak. </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">The cool temperate climate is warmed by the Gulf Stream, which keeps Iceland milder than most places at the same latitude.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">The fishing industry provides the majority of IcelandΓÇÖs exports. Hydroelectric power is used to smelt aluminium; geothermal power warms extensive greenhouses. Ample grazing land makes Iceland self-sufficient in meat and dairy products. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Krona.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Norwegians settled in Iceland in the 9th century. From 930 Iceland was an independent republic, but Norwegian sovereignty was accepted in 1264 to end a civil war. When Denmark and Norway were united (1381), Iceland became Danish. Nationalism grew in the 19th century, and in 1918 Iceland gained independence, linked to Denmark only by their shared monarchy. In World War II the Danish link was severed and a republic was declared (1944). Disputes over fishing rights in Icelandic territorial waters led to clashes with British naval vessels in the 1950s and 1970s.</span></text>
